So many movies are pushed back repeatedly or, even worse, just dropped on the shelf, that it's tough to get excited about upcoming stuff as a genre fan. You think this happens to romantic comedies? This week we want to share something very special with you all. We want to share our pain and trauma over having watched Mutant Chronicles. With a great cast, the writer of one of our favourite films and based on a RPG with rich and deep lore, its a bit sucky. But like a lame old dog with one eye and mange, we still kinda love it despite its many, many flaws. Don't expect us to make much sense in this rant about spending all your money on John Malkovich, not hiding an apocalypse machine (that has multiple origin stories), Inexplicable Dorothy and one very special mutant spaceship pilot. This movie had an interesting plot, awesome badguys, and an amazing band of heroes. It was all set to be the 13th Warrior with mutants... well for about the first 5 minutes.
Then the horrible joke of a stylized comic book movie approached and ruined any chance of an intelligible sequence of events. In fact most dialog was also ruined by the terrible, terrible, terrible choice of "Yet Another Graphic Novel" directing.
The way the story is "told" is by listening to dialog that tells part of the story, then watching a scene that uses that dialog to hint at one of several possible outcomes. It is not until the next scene that the events in the previous scene are confirmed or denied. This is manifested by a constant barrage of actions taken by a single person of which you have to assume all members of the team have taken. From entering the escape hatch, to repelling down both ropes, to being ambushed under the cross beams, most scenes are incompletely conveyed thoughts or actions.
This leads to an unfinished ending that is waiting for the next scene to confirm it, but one does not exist. It is the ending. So the audience is left with only speculation as to what the end result was. Not in a good "Total Recall" kind of a way. It is just plain not finished.
The last, and most fatal, error that this movie makes is to leave the "pick 'em off one by one" generic survivor horror story up to contrived actio...
